Wills

Why make a will?

No one likes to think about what happens when they die.

Most of us appreciate the need to protect ourselves and our families from unseen disasters. We insure our homes, cars, possessions and our lives so that, whatever may happen, our loved ones will be financially secure. Yet ironically, around 70% of the adult population fails to make a will.

  1. Making your Will means that what you own goes where you want it to and not where the law has chosen.
  2. If you have young children, you can include the name of the person you would like to care for them rather than leaving the decision to the courts or social services. If you have children under 18 then making a Will is the only way to appoint a guardian.
  3. Not making a Will can have disastrous consequences!
    • Joint bank accounts and savings can be frozen until probate.
    • Family heirlooms are often sold because family disagree who should have them.
    • The Exchequer receives millions each year in unclaimed estates from people who died without a valid Will.
  4. Lessen the risks of inheritance tax.
  5. Avoid unnecessary grief for your family by making sure there are no arguments over inheritance.
  6. Take the opportunity to give to the charities and people that matter to you. Bequeathing your goods to your nearest and dearest by making a Will is an important expression of your love for them.
  7. Protect your family from delays, hardship and worry - even costly legal bills.
  8. Make a Will and achieve peace of mind knowing that you have taken responsibility for your affairs.
